Surgery can be intimidating. We would love to serve as your guide through the preparation and rehabilitation process. Success on the day of the surgery will depend on your surgeon and caregiving team, but getting back to the things you love will be a journey of several weeks, and success will depend largely on you.

We hope that this handout will help answer your initial questions about this process and how Lincoln Orthopedic Physical Therapy (LOPT) can help.

Basic overview of the rehab process

Every surgery and every patient is different, but knowing a general timeline prior to surgery will help you get the necessary support lined up.

After surgery, you can expect:

  • 2-5 days of rehabilitation in the hospital, where your inpatient rehabilitation team will work with you to ensure that you are ready for discharge
  • Discharge to a rehabilitation center or your home, at which point you will either start outpatient or receive home health care
  • 2-3 months of continued therapy with decreasing frequency

END GOAL: Get back to doing the things you love.

You will be encountering many different healthcare professionals during this process, but you’ll be spending the most time with your physical therapists—think of them as your primary guide.
